Hello there!!!
After a long weekend, enjoying with friends, just chatting and gossiping whole day, with no much work to do, your body also tends to become lazy πŸ™‚
You do not feel like going back to work, do not feel like start the workout again!! That was the same thing that happened to me!!! I did not even feel like opening my laptop. It took me one whole week to get over the laziness.
This delicious , comforting one pot meal is absolutely perfect to start your weekend again πŸ™‚

What you Need :
Chickpeas / Chana : 500 gms can
Rice : 3 cups, Raw, Basmati or Long Grain Rice *
Whole Garam Masala : Cloves-8,Cinnamom-2 inch stick,Shah Jeera-1 tsp,Star Anise-1,Bay Leaf-2
Onion : 1 big, sliced thin
Green Chillies : 2, slit lengthwise
Mint : a handful, chopped
Coriander leaves : a handful, chopped
Lemon Juice : squeezed from 1 big lime
Ginger paste : 1 tsp
Garlic paste : 1 tsp
Tomatoes : 2 large, blanched, peeled, de-seeded and chopped fine
Tomato paste : 1 Tbsp
Chilli Powder : 1 Tbsp
Chole Masala : 2 Tbsp, you can use MTR or Everest (use garam masala if you do not have this)
Salt : to taste
Oil : 3 – 4 Tbsp

Wash rice in several changes of water, till water runs clear.
Soak rice in enough water and keep aside.
In a deep wide pan, add oil.
Once oil is hot, add the whole garam masala – cloves, cinnamon, start anise, bay leaves and cardamom.
Then add sliced onion and green chillies. Fry for a minute.
Now add in ginger garlic paste, and fry till raw smell disappears.
Add in mint and half of coriander leaves.
Add in tomatoes and tomato paste and mix well. Cook for few minutes on medium-low heat.
Add in chickpeas, and chole masala or garam masala (what ever you are using), chili powder and salt.
Mix well.
Add in lemon juice. Fry well.
Remove from heat.
Transfer this mixture into an electric cooker.
Drain rice and add to the cooker.
Add 4 and half cups of water (1 rice: 1 1/2 water). Add salt to taste.
Cook till done. Add remaining half of coriander leaves
Serve hot with Raita.

Mom’s Notes:
The cup I mentioned for measuring rice is the rice cooker cup.
Alternatively you can cook this in a pressure cooker too.

  1. This looks great! I am definitely going to have to give it a try. I’m curious… what is the difference between Chole Masala and Garam Masala; I’ve never heard of the Chole kind…

    1. Hi Liz, In Garam Masala I use the basic ingredients like coriander seeds, cloves, cinnamon, cumin, cardamom, small amt of Nutmeg.
      I am not sure what all ingredients go into the store bought Chana Masala but it adds lots of flavor. Try it in Indian Store, the best brands are Everest and MTR.

  2. I came across you blog recently while searching for Karachi bakery biscuit recipe, live your site, right now am having the chana pulao, and it awesome. Followed the recipe exactly, with little tweaks hear and there, but the result is good.
